This page is for Instrument Technician work at Jubail. The same trade is hired at other locations too — see below.

About the job

Instrument technicians at AKFAL calibrate and install pressure, temperature, level and flow instruments, check loops to the DCS, and service control valves and positioners on maintenance contracts and shutdowns. The role sits between the field and the control room and needs neat documentation as much as neat wiring.

What you will do

  • Calibrate transmitters, gauges and switches with certified test equipment
  • Install instruments, impulse lines, tubing and junction boxes
  • Loop-check from field device to DCS and record results
  • Service control valves, positioners and solenoid valves
  • Maintain calibration certificates and loop folders

What we look for

  • 3 years or more as an instrument technician in process plants
  • Reads loop diagrams, P&IDs and hook-up drawings
  • Uses HART communicators, calibrators and multimeters
  • Understands intrinsically safe circuits and Ex practice
  • Working English for datasheets

Certificates that help

  • Diploma in instrumentation or electronics
  • Calibration or HART training
  • Hazardous-area awareness
  • Client site induction, if held

Working in Jubail

Jubail Industrial City is where AKFAL is based and where most of its crews work. The city holds the SABIC affiliates, Sadara, SATORP and dozens of petrochemical, fertiliser and steel plants, each with its own maintenance contractors and its own shutdown calendar. Crews live in AKFAL's camp nearby and reach site by company bus.

Plants and projects

  • SABIC affiliates (Petrokemya, Kayan, Sharq, Kemya, Hadeed and others)
  • Sadara Chemical Company
  • SATORP refinery (Aramco – TotalEnergies)
  • Sipchem, Tasnee, Advanced Petrochemical, Farabi
  • Marafiq utilities and the Jubail desalination plants
  • Amiral petrochemical complex (under construction)

Typical work

  • Turnaround and shutdown crews for the petrochemical complexes
  • Maintenance contracts on rotating equipment
  • Piping fabrication and repair in the AKFAL workshop
  • Scaffolding, rigging and crane hire inside running plants
When demand peaks
Shutdowns cluster in spring and autumn, when plants take their planned outages; demand for welders, fitters and scaffolders peaks from February to April and from September to November.
Accommodation and transport
AKFAL's managed camp is within reach of Jubail Industrial City, with mess hall, laundry and daily buses to the plants.

Questions applicants ask

Do I need experience?

Yes — three or more years on process instrumentation. Electronics repair experience without plant exposure is not enough for the loop-check test.

Which certificates do I need?

An instrumentation diploma is the normal profile; vendor training on transmitters or control valves is a plus.

Iqama, transfer and visa

Technicians with a transferable Iqama first; overseas recruitment through licensed agencies with no fee to the applicant.

Hours and shifts

Regular day shifts on maintenance contracts; extended shifts with paid overtime during shutdowns and commissioning.
