This page is for Welder work at Ras Al Khair. The same trade is hired at other locations too — see below.
About the job
AKFAL welders work on process piping, structural steel and tank repairs at plants across the Eastern Province, in the workshop in Jubail and on client sites during shutdowns. Most of the work is carbon steel and stainless; some jobs call for duplex and alloy. Every welder is trade-tested before mobilisation and works under an AKFAL supervisor and a QA/QC inspector.
What you will do
- Weld pipe, plate and structural steel to the WPS issued for the job
- Prepare joints: bevelling, fit-up, tacking, pre-heat where the procedure calls for it
- Pass a coupon test before mobilisation and repeat it when a client requires
- Keep welds free of defects the inspector would reject: porosity, undercut, lack of fusion
- Follow the permit-to-work, hot-work and confined-space rules of the site
What we look for
- At least 3 years of welding on industrial piping or structures
- 6G certification in SMAW and TIG (GTAW); MIG (GMAW) is a plus
- Able to read isometrics, weld maps and a WPS
- Comfortable with shift work and shutdown hours
- Basic English or Arabic for permits and toolbox talks
Certificates that help
- 6G welder certificate (SMAW / GTAW)
- Aramco or SABIC welder approval, if held
- Confined-space and hot-work training
- Trade certificate from a recognised institute
Working in Ras Al Khair
Ras Al Khair, 80 km north of Jubail, is Ma'aden's industrial city: phosphate and ammonia plants, the aluminium smelter and rolling mill, the desalination and power complex and the shipyard. It is heavy industry with long maintenance campaigns and a steady need for mechanical, electrical and rigging trades. AKFAL crews commute from the Jubail camp.
Plants and projects
- Ma'aden Phosphate and Ma'aden Wa'ad Al Shamal (ammonia, phosphoric acid, DAP)
- Ma'aden Aluminium smelter, rolling mill and casthouse
- Ras Al Khair power and desalination complex (SWCC)
- International Maritime Industries shipyard
- Port and bulk-handling terminals
Typical work
- Planned maintenance on kilns, mills and conveyors
- Electrical and instrumentation maintenance in the smelter
- Structural and piping repairs; heavy rigging
- Crane and telehandler hire for maintenance campaigns
- When demand peaks
- Ma'aden's maintenance campaigns run through the year with larger turnarounds in the cooler months; demand is steadier than in Jubail's shutdown peaks.
- Accommodation and transport
- Crews are housed in the AKFAL camp near Jubail and travel by company bus, about an hour each way; site camps are used on longer campaigns.
Questions applicants ask
Do I need experience?
Yes. We mobilise welders who already have three or more years on industrial piping or steel structures. A welder without experience can apply as a helper and be trained towards the 6G test.
Which certificates do I need?
A 6G certificate in SMAW and TIG is the main one. An existing Aramco or SABIC approval shortens the client's own test, but every welder is coupon-tested by AKFAL before the first job anyway.
Iqama, transfer and visa
Applicants already in Saudi Arabia with a transferable Iqama are mobilised fastest. We also recruit from abroad through licensed agencies, and the transfer or visa is handled by AKFAL with no fee to the applicant.
Hours and shifts
Normal work is a day shift at the workshop or site. During shutdowns and turnarounds crews work extended shifts, and overtime is paid as the Saudi Labour Law requires.
Where would I live in Ras Al Khair?
Crews are housed in the AKFAL camp near Jubail and travel by company bus, about an hour each way; site camps are used on longer campaigns.
How is salary decided?
Pay is set by trade test result, certificates and years of experience, and confirmed in your written offer before you accept. It is discussed at interview, not published, so that a stronger welder is never capped by a listed figure.
